Since the birth of humanity and the awareness that we are alive, we have been frightened of death. The last breath and what comes after. We make up stories to comfort ourselves, to explain the unknown, to be the child saying, “if we are good, it won’t happen. Someone will save us and we will live happily ever after.”

I was that child.

A single night of companionship forces the memory of how centuries of servitude started. The gods can be merciless when you have something they want, whether it is worship or something darker.
